FOREVER OURS

SYNOPSIS

Forever Ours is the highly anticipated prequel to the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Shattered Hearts Series. This can be read as a stand alone or before Relentless.

Sometimes, it takes more than love to mend a shattered heart.

After eight years of being tossed around from one home to another, never forming any meaningful friendships or bonds with her foster families, Claire's caseworker gives her an ultimatum: Behave or your next home will be a halfway house.

When fifteen-year-old Claire arrives at the home of Jackie Knight and meets Jackie's fifteen-year-old son, tattooed guitarist Chris, she fears she'll be seeing the inside of that halfway house soon. But Chris isn't like any other guy Claire has ever encountered and he soon gains her trust through his music and unwavering patience.

Claire has finally found her forever home and she and Chris soon find themselves falling in love.

But Chris’s dreams of musical stardom and Claire’s need for a stable home soon put their love in jeopardy. Chris struggles deeply with his plans for the future, entirely reluctant to leave Claire behind; until Claire does something that may break their love — and the only home she’s comes to know — forever.

EXCERPT

There are moments in life that you know will be burned into your memory forever. Chris calls these “movie screen moments” — where everything slows down and you know that something important is about to happen that will change the course of the story. He says that the best songs are written about movie screen moments. I don’t know if this is true. All I know is that this is one of those moments.
I can feel it in the air. And I know that when I look back, I’ll remember everything about this moment in time; the smells, the tastes, the sounds, and the touch. The touch.
Chris and I are both sitting on the carpet with our backs leaned against the sofa, our fingers woven together as MTV plays in the background. This is something we’ve done every day for the past six weeks, ever since summer break began. As soon as Jackie leaves for work in the morning, we both get up and have breakfast together. He usually makes me a bowl of cereal or I make us both some scrambled eggs. Then we hang out in the living room for a few hours until his friends come over. Sometimes, Chris plays his guitar for me. Sometimes, we sit here and pretend to watch MTV, holding hands while Mr. Miyagi lays out across both of our laps, begging to be petted. Well, I don’t know if Chris is pretending to watch MTV, but I know I am.
All I can seem to think about when I’m near Chris is whether or not this will last or if he will be just another person I have to lose. But this doesn’t stop me from enjoying these hours spent together. I’ve never been happier in all my life. Not even when my mom was alive.
I’ll admit. I was sort of hoping today would be different then all the other mornings Chris and I have hung out. Not that I don’t like this small moment of closeness we share every day. But today’s my sixteenth birthday. I guess I figured that would make today even more special for us. I was kind of hoping I might get my first kiss.
“Tristan’s coming over in half an hour and we’re going to the mall. You want to come?”
My heart sinks a little. Chris knows that Tristan and I don’t get along very well. He hasn’t even wished me a happy birthday and now he’s leaving to hang out with Tristan.
I try to let go of his hand and he tightens his grip. “What’s wrong?”
I attempt to pull my hand away again and this time he lets go. “I don’t want to go to the mall.”
“Are you okay?”
I stand up and he immediately stands with me. “I’m just tired. I think I’m gonna go back to bed.”
I take a few steps, but he grabs my hand to stop me. When I look over my shoulder at him, he’s wearing a crooked smile. “Can you take Mr. Miyagi upstairs with you?”
My shoulders slump as I turn toward Chris’s Shiba Inu where he’s lounging on the sofa.
Chris chuckles. “I’m only kidding. I’m not going anywhere with Tristan today. I’m taking you for a ride.”
“What?”
“On my bike.”
“I’m not going on that thing.”
Chris got his motorcycle license the week after he turned sixteen less than three months ago. He’s been trying to get me to ride with him on his crappy racing bike ever since the first time I let him hold my hand.
“Come on,” he pleads. “I have something I want to show you, but I want to do it alone. I don’t want to ask Tristan to take us. Please?”
I stare into his eyes for a moment and he tilts his head. His brown hair always looks calculatedly messy, the way it’s just long enough to cover his ears yet still sticks out in all the right places. His skin is so smooth; I often find myself wishing I could press my lips to his cheek just to feel the softness of his skin. And don’t even get me started on the metal stud in his tongue. The way he plays with it when he’s tuning his guitar gives me butterflies. I don’t know what Chris sees in me other than the way my hand seems to fit so perfectly in his.
He pulls me a little closer and lifts my hand to his mouth. My heart races as he lays a soft kiss on my knuckles. “Claire, it’s your birthday. And I know you probably haven’t had a whole lot of birthdays you want to remember for the rest of your life, but I want this birthday to be the one you never forget. Let me take you for a ride.”
I stare at his lips as he says these words and that’s when it happens. This is that moment; the moment where everything slows down and nothing is ever the same.

Our Review

4.5 STARS
In the Fields is such a touching book, it will touch your heart in so many ways and leave you with a smile on your face.  In the beginning of the story you meet a very young girl named Caroline.  She wakes up every morning and makes her momma and daddy breakfast and takes her dog out.  Caroline comes from a small town where the blacks and the whites are from different sides of the track and do not mix.  Caroline’s home life isn’t one that would be traditional.  Her daddy is a drunk and her mommy has other things to do than raise her daughter.  The only person she has is Isaiah. Isaiah is her school friend and they become close over time, they go through so much together.  Caroline is truly one of the strongest characters I have ever read about.  Certain heartbreaking and gut wrenching circumstances force her to move away from her home to an unknown city.  Moving away was bitter sweet.  She left her Isaiah, but met some amazing life long friends.  Through the years she finds forgiveness to those around her, love, trust, and the comfort and support she so desperately deserved.

It’s really hard to write this review without giving away major points of this story, but we truly loved this book.  It’s hard to imagine and wrap your head around the fact that these issues weren’t that long ago.  It’s sad that interracial couples had no chance at being together because of judgmental people. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book. It is truly remarkable and Willow Aster’s writing is beautiful.

Gabriel's Redemption by Sylvain Reynard

GABRIELS REDEMPTION BY SYLVAIN REYNARD

Summary:
From the author of the New York Times bestsellers Gabriel’s Rapture and Gabriel’s Inferno comes the epic conclusion to the captivating romantic trilogy. Professor Gabriel Emerson has left his position at the University of Toronto to embark on a new life with his beloved Julianne. Together, he’s confident that they can face any challenge. And he’s eager to become a father. But Julianne’s graduate program threatens Gabriel’s plans, as the pressures of being a student become all consming. When she is given the honor of presenting an academic lecture at Oxford, Gabriel is forced to confront Julianne about the subject of her presentation—research that conflicts with his own. And in Oxford, several individuals from their past appear, including an old nemesis intent on humiliating Julia and exposing one of Gabriel’s darkest secrets. In an effort to confront his remaining demons, Gabriel begins a quest to discover more about his biological parents, beginning a chain of events that has startling repercussions for himself, Julianne, and his hope of having a family.

Our reviews:  5 STARS
Gabriel's Redemption was one of the most anticipated books of 2013 and I was impatient expecting it's release. It was a perfect conclusion to one of my favorite series.  Sylvain Reynard's writing is IMPECCABLE, he has a way to get in to the skin of people that have some sensibility for Arts and music.
I loved these characters from the first book and can not imagined a better development for the them and the story, I'm gonna miss the Professor Emerson and his beloved Julianne, but the way he finished it made me happy, I got the kind of HEA that I wished for Gabriel and His wife And And surprisingly for all the secondary characters too! Well done SR, I Love these books!
I highly recommend Gabriel's Inferno Trilogy ! And definitely I will read his next work!

Gabriel's Redemption was an unexpected treasure. All us loyal fans were excited when Sylvain Reynard announced "Gabriel's Redemption" was being written. This book was packed with so much more than the previous two. I still love "Gabriel's Inferno" & "Gabriel's Rapture" in truth they will always be my favorite but the third is different. Now when I say different I mean that in a good way we get to see so much more of all the characters and feeling from them. I enjoyed reading and seeing a happy Gabriel and a whole new side to him. In Gabriel's Redemption you get to see what's happening with all the characters and some of the nasty ones we didn't like make appearances throughout. In this book Gabriel and Julia are adjusting to life as a married couple and the little bumps along the way. The struggles of daily life, school and marriage. Gabriel takes a strong lead role in this book. His focus on making sure Julia can accomplish all she wants and it be her time in the spotlight. The Gabriel we met in "Gabriel's Inferno" and the one now are almost two complete opposites. Reading Gabriel's Redemption it shows you how much he has grown, healed and changed to be a better man. I truly loved the book because it also tied up other loose ends with other characters. I plan on re-reading all three again as I love the characters that much. It's an amazing book that out surpassed my expectations and hopes! It's a must read!

Excerpt
I stood at the cold dark water’s edge, my reflection staring back at me from the glasslike surface. The reflection of a girl that I no longer knew. I breathed in the overwhelming scent of pine and recognized the tranquility that surrounded me. The soft hum of the city in the distance, the echo of an eagle’s cry overhead, the steady drum of my heart—the only sounds that could be heard in the quiet serenity that was present all around me. Inside an entirely different scene existed. Whirling thoughts, like hurricane-force winds, blew through my mind while a dark, thunderous storm was raging inside my soul, cutting the power to the central organ of my existence—my heart. I was destined to weather this storm on my own. After all, like Mother Nature, I was the controlling force behind these conditions. I threw a stone into the mirrored surface of the water before me and watched the small circular wave expand from the point where it broke through the stillness. It was hard not to think of the stone as the choice I had made, the choice that inevitably created waves in the smooth waters of my life. The first lie, like the first ripple in the water, seemed so small but quickly became more significant. Each wave growing in size and depth, impossible to stop. The effect from that one choice spread through my life like the ripple moving across the surface of the water. I longed for the stillness.
                                       Our Review
Ripple starts with Kendi and Adam in high school and really not knowing each other at first. They started seeing each other Adam asked Kendi to homecoming, she was so excited, But Homecoming would change there relationship forever. You see them grow as  a couple and as there own person over a year and a half. Then Adam leaves for collage and Kendi  still has a year of high school left but there love is strong  enough to make it. While Adam is at Collage Kendi is home and finds out something that could cause Adam to lose her forever. This something is so HUGH You are not sure if they can or will recover from it.
I have to say I was shocked by what this HUGH something is and you will be too! They both keep and have so many secrets and they are not what you would have thought or guessed! I went through so many emotions while reading Ripple , It is definitely worth your time to read and I highly recommend it! You will fall in love with all the Characters and be left wanting more. So we are left with one Question will there be a sequel to Ripple?

REVIEW:

I went Into this book with an open mind not sure what to except, I have to say I was sucked in almost instantly and didn’t want to put the book down. The Characters in the book are so sweet and you fall in love with them all right out of the gate. Okay so Cassie is On her way to her friends place cause where better to run to run when your running from your problems and that’s what Cassie is doing. Well along the way Cassie gets lost and gets in a accident. Jason Get her out of the car and calls for help, he also goes to the hospital and makes sure she’s all right. Jason offers Cassie to stay with him and his family until her car is done being fixed, Cassie isn’t so sure that’s a good idea since they only meet 8 hours ago.

In Away you see these Characters learn life lessons, learn how to live the life they want and not  the one others wanted for them but to live in the moment don’t let the small stuff slip by because sometimes the small stuff is the most meaning full.    I don’t want to go to much into this book because of fear I will give to much AWAY but AWAY is a MUST read I haven’t had a book touch me in such a way in such a long time that I might just have to read it again. I’m not going to say I didn’t cry like a baby I did!!! It’s sad you will cry you will be hurt. You will want more and I’m hoping we won’t have to wait to long.
I’m giving AWAY 5+ stars

EXCERPT:
It was hard to sleep; I was tossing and turning more than ever before. The butterflies in my stomach were in full force as I recollected about each kiss Jason gave me; on my lips and on my bare skin. My thoughts were interrupted as I heard the beeping on my phone. I saw the light illuminating my room as I reached over to grab it; it was a text from Jason. I was suddenly extremely grateful I let him plug his number into my phone after we left the garage earlier today.
Are you asleep yet?
How could I be sleeping? His lips just rocked my world; my heart was racing too much to be sleeping.
Not a chance.
Me either.
I put my phone down and got out of bed. I didn't know what else to do so I let my body decide. It would have argued with my brain either way. I let my infectious craving for his lips guide me downstairs to his room as I quietly crept to his door.
I took a deep breath and tapped on his door. He swung it open immediately as if he knew I was on the other side. The room was dimly lit, but I could see just enough. He was standing there in nothing but boxers; I couldn't help but look him up and down from head to toe. His mouth was open and his breathing was heavy as his chest rose and fell quickly, matching mine. It didn't take long for the hunger inside to take over. He stepped forward and grabbed a hold of me, pulling me close to him as he took us over to his bed. I didn't know where we were going to take this tonight, and quite frankly, I just didn't care; all I knew was I needed to be with him. It could have been Jase, it could have been my hormones, but every part of me was craving his touch. I got a taste and I needed more.
“Cassie,” he whispered.
“Shhh,” I whispered back. I put my finger over his mouth. I didn't want to hear what he was going to say, we had done enough talking for the night.
I stepped up closer to him, raising myself on my tippy toes so I was closer to his lips as I pressed mine hard against his. I heard a small moan escape him as he tangled his hands in my loose hair, pulling us onto the bed.
We fell onto the bed and I positioned myself with my back against it as Jason hovered over me, his arms on either side. I took my hands, placed them on his scruffy face, and pulled him closer to me. Somewhere between being pulled onto the bed and Jason hovering over me, our lips had lost each other; this was not going to work for me. I didn't even have to pull hard as his lips curled up and lowered down to my face. “I've never seen you like this Sweetheart,” he whispered into my ear as he nibbled on it.
I was sure a soft moan escaped my lips as he took my ear into his mouth. “I've been holding it in,” I told him.
“I can tell,” he said quietly before running his lips down my neck then into the curve of my shoulder. It was making me shiver from my neck all the way down to the aching spot between my legs. He was trailing his way down my neck when I suddenly realized I needed to take off what was keeping him from continuing further down.
“Wait,” I breathed out. Jason lifted his lips from my skin as I wiggled my arms enough to slip off the cami I was wearing, throwing it to the side of the bed. He closed his eyes and let out a deep breath.
“Damn Cassie, you are going to be the death of me.” He opened his eyes back up, piercing them into mine. I needed more.
“Please keep going,” I begged him.
“You don’t have to beg, but it's so damn sexy when you do,” he said softly as he brought his lips back to my skin, taking his time as he moved further down to my bare chest. He slowly grazed his lips across each breast before making his way down, trailing kisses until he got to the top of my yoga pants. He was driving me wild; I was having a hard time not ripping all my clothes off. This was not normal for me, but I loved every moment of it. He was bringing out a side of me that hadn't existed before, and I hoped it didn't go away.
I grabbed his upper arms and rolled us over so I was on top of him. I could feel that this was just as good for him as it was for me, as his excitement was sitting between my legs.
“Enjoying yourself?” I asked in the sexiest voice I could find.
“You have no idea. Now get down here,” he said as he pulled me down to his lips, biting down on my lower one before smiling and finally pressing our lips together again. Kissing him was what I always imagined it should feel like. Not wanting our lips to ever be apart because they felt too good pressed together. I knew deep down kissing had to be that amazing or people wouldn’t be so passionate about it. I completely understood it now and I could finally say the feeling happened to me. Jason, he made it happen, he was the spark that lit my lips on fire. I couldn’t help but go insane inside as his lips continued to kiss me like his life depended on it. I slowly released my lips from his and began placing kisses on his chin, running them all the way down from his chest to the very top of his boxers. I slowly raised myself up and loved seeing the satisfied grin plastered on his face. I put my hands on his shoulders and caressed them all the way down, feeling his chest form goose bumps as I did. I took my index finger and traced a line along the top of his boxers, making a soft moan rumble through him. I lowered myself back down on top of him; his hands grabbing my back as our bare chests collided together. I leaned my mouth close to his ear, whispering into it. “I know you green light this.”
That must have sparked something in him because I heard a growl escape his throat as he rolled us back so he was now hovering over me once again.
“Just so you know, I'm not this guy. I'm not normally the guy who has a hard time controlling himself. You seriously have me going crazy right now,” he said with a heavy breath
“Just so you know. I like it.”

I'm very passionate about writing stories full of love, lust, eroticism, and strong characters entwined around each other in an interesting, suspenseful journey.

I’m a COO in my technology-based "day job,” which requires a mix of technical and creative writing for both internal and client-facing materials, but it was not satisfying my artistic spirit. Writing the “Charity” series has been absolutely fulfilling and exciting.

Excerpt
Behind me, the door swung shut quietly in its hinges, locking itself after it clicked into the jamb. "Justin?" There's no answer. Maybe he's not home yet. I'm putting my bag down when I hear the voice behind me. "Get up against the wall—NOW! Put your hands out," he demands. There's no point in resisting. I step up to the foyer wall and nervously place my hands against it, waiting to see what the next move will be. My pulse is a loud whomp in my ears. The sound of his footfalls fill the small space, approaching on me slowly, deliberately, until I see his feet on the floor between mine, his bare feet and bare legs. Strong hands lift the heavy coat off me and toss it to the floor beside us and then return to my shoulders where they begin to coil up my hair. A familiar hardness presses into the small of my back. "I've been thinking about you all day," Justin whispers into my ear, making my knees weak. "And what, exactly, were you thinking about?" I breathe, praying for his magical hands. His left hand pulls my hair, turning my face toward his. "I thought about making you cry with pleasure. It's the only way I can tolerate your devastating absence." He quickly bites my lower lip, tempting me. "I love you, Warrior. And I need you." Justin's right hand slithers around to the front of me under the bottom of my shirt, rising up between my breasts to grab my bra like a handle. Then both of his hands pull me tightly against him, molding me into his warm body. My lips ache for him, my hunger for the taste of his tongue spills over. "Kiss me, please!" I beg. "Touch me like a man should touch a woman." "I'm going to do everything to you that a man should," he growls. His mouth finds mine, the pleasure of it searing all of my senses. He tugs my hair a little more and completes the seal between our lips, circling his tongue around mine. Underneath my shirt, his powerful hand lets go of my bra and gently grabs my breast, pressing the fleshiness between his fingers. He lets me hear a low moan deep in his chest. It's more felt against my body than it's heard by my ears. It doesn't matter that want more, that my clit is throbbing for his touch, Justin makes me wait for it. He releases my hair and my breast, both hands moving to the bottom of my shirt where he pulls at it uncaringly, ripping it over my head and tossing it on top of my coat. My bra comes off me with the same ease, and he spins me around to face him, pushing my back against the wall. "My fucking God! I will never get tired of looking at you," his deep voice confesses while his eyes widen with lust. There's no misunderstanding him. My own eyes were taking in his fully unclothed body with the same excitement and enthusiasm. The thick muscles of his chest rise and fall with his heavy breathing, and his well-defined shoulders beg me to claw my nails into them. Christ! How does he stay in that shape? Fuck it—I don't care!

Excerpt
My lust for her had turned to desire within seconds, and I couldn’t stand the thought of not feeling her soft skin underneath my hands. I pulled her through the living room and down the hallway by her wrist and didn’t loosen my grip until we were standing in front of my bedroom door. I pressed my hard body against hers, forcing her body to stay unmoving between me and the hard wood door. My hand slowly moved from the soft skin on her exposed thigh, to the warmth of her lower back. Her skin felt like a live wire of electricity flowing beneath my touch. I needed her. I wanted her in way that I had never thought possible. Her lips parted and I could feel her warm breath glide across my face. I dipped my head and lightly pressed my lips to her neck. The small moan that escaped her mouth was my undoing, and there was no more holding back. I was going to make her mine.

SYNOPSIS A standalone novel about a girl, a boy, and fate. From New York Times best selling author Cassia Leo, comes an epic love story about rewriting destiny. Over the course of five years, Mikki and Crush cross paths on two separate occasions. Their first encounter changes Mikki’s life forever, but their second meeting leaves them both buried beneath the emotional wreckage of a violent attack. Mikki is left with more questions and grief than she can handle, while Crush is forced to forget the girl who saved his life. Now nineteen years old, Mikki Gladstone has decided she’s tired of the mind-numbing meds. She books a flight to Los Angeles to end her life far away from her loving, though often distant, family. Twenty-one-year-old Crush has always channeled his blackest thoughts into his music, but he’s never had great aspirations. He decides to fly to Los Angeles to record a demo of the only song he’s never performed in public; a song he wrote for a girl he doesn’t even know: Black Box. He has no expectations of fame and he’s never felt like his life had any purpose… until he meets Mikki in Terminal B. When Mikki and Crush cross paths for the third time in Terminal B, neither has any idea who the other person is; until they slowly piece together their history and realize that fate has more in store for them than just another love story.
EXCERPT chapter 1 mikki
The moment you realize you’re going to die is nothing like I imagined it would be. I imagined a deep internal struggle coupled with a visceral physical response—fight or flight. But there’s no fighting this. I’m going to die. It’s possible that everyone on this plane is going to die. I wonder if they feel this overwhelming sense of peace, or if the squeal of the plane engine has drowned out all their thoughts. He grabs the oxygen mask as it drops from the compartment and he’s yelling something as he puts the elastic band over my head. He pulls his own mask over his head then he grabs my hand and looks me in the eye. There’s no panic in his eyes. Maybe he feels this same calm I’m feeling. Or maybe he just wants me to know that he loves me. Or, more importantly, that he trusts that whatever happens to us in the next few seconds was meant to be. Fate. I used to think fate was for religious nuts and people who were too afraid to take their fate into their own hands. Now I know the truth.
chapter 2 mikki music note
Please don’t look for me. You probably won’t find me. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, and please don’t blame yourselves. I’m just tired. Trying to cope.... trying to forget.... It’s not enough anymore. I just want to close my eyes and know that it will all be over soon. There’s nothing anyone could have done. You’ve all done more than enough. I hope you all find peace knowing I am no longer suffering. I love you guys. Tell Meaghan I leave her my black box. Mikki I tuck the note inside a plastic baggie and seal it tightly, then I lift my bedroom window an inch and lay the bagged note on the window sill. I shut the window tight to trap the note there. Taking one last look around the bedroom, I smile as I think of how much I won’t miss this house. The pink tulip-shaped knit cap my best friend Rina bought for me in Holland sits on top of my dresser. I’ve only worn it once, the day she brought it back for me from her family vacation last summer. I was in High Point Treatment Center at the time, in the dual diagnosis unit because I’m one of the special cases that needed both treatment for attempted suicide and drug detox. “You look awfully cheerful for someone who’s traveling alone.” Meaghan’s green eyes follow my suitcase as I drag it down the stairs, then her gaze shifts to my face. My sister is seventeen, but she’s not stupid. She knows the signs, which is why I’m trying my hardest not to exhibit the typical suicidal behavior. I didn’t give away all my belongings. I’m not traveling light. I have tried not to appear too chipper over the last couple of days. Yes, it feels amazing to have a plan. It feels like a ten-ton slab of cement has been lifted off my chest. I can breathe. I can think about the future without the crippling anxiety and depression that comes with not knowing if the pain will ever end. But I can’t let Meaghan or my parents see how ridiculously relieved I’m feeling. They’ve seen that behavior too many times. The last time I made plans to die, three months ago, my mom saw the signs and followed me to the hotel room where I was going to hang myself. The time before that, I swallowed a bottle of pills in my uncle’s bathroom. It was my cousin Gertie who noticed I was acting too happy. She told my Uncle Cort, “Mikki is smiling again.” Uncle Cort broke the door down and that’s when I ended up in High Point. That’s also when I swore I wouldn’t commit suicide anywhere that someone could find me. “Cheerful?” I repeat Meaghan’s adjective as I pull up the telescoping handle on the suitcase and roll it across the tiled foyer toward the front door. “More like nervous as fuck. I’ve never flown without Mom.” Meaghan yanks her green parka out of the coat closet and pulls it on over her hoodie. “I’ll take that,” she says as she pulls the hood of the parka over her long, brown hair and grabs my carryon bag. I open the door and we both suck in a sharp breath when we’re blasted with a flurry of freezing winter air. The snow sticks to my face and I quickly close the front door so it doesn’t get in the house. “Jesus fucking Christ. It’s colder than a witch’s tit out here. They’re going to cancel the flights if this shit keeps up,” Meaghan says as we carefully descend the front steps. My dad covered the steps in his special mixture of salt and sand, but it’s not foolproof. “If they cancel the flights, I’ll come back, but they’ll have to reschedule the flight. I can’t just not show up. I saved up three months paychecks for this fucking ticket.” Meaghan opens the wooden front gate and the cabbie scurries out of the car to help us with the bags. As he stuffs the bags in the trunk, I turn to Meaghan and she’s crying. Something tells me she knows, but she would stop me if she knew—wouldn’t she? “Why are you crying? It’s just a job interview. I’m coming back in four days.” “I know,” she whispers before she wraps her arms around my waist. “But I’ll miss you. Bring me back a hot actor.” “I will.” We hug like this for far longer than normal. It takes every bit of self-control in me not to tell her that everything will finally be okay when I’m gone. She finally pulls away and punches my arm. “Get the hell out of here.” “I love you, too,” I say as I slide into the backseat of the cab and my heart stutters as I look at the house I grew up in for the last time. The driver slams my door shut and gets into the driver’s seat. “Logan?” he asks as he turns up the heater. “Yeah, Terminal B,” I reply as I watch Meaghan scurry into the house to escape the cold. I reach into my handbag and pull out my gloves, then I see the bottle of pills. I lay the black gloves on my lap and reach into my purse for the bottle. On the outside, this is just a normal bottle of anti-psychotic meds. On the inside, this is my self-prescribed emergency meth stash. Each capsule is carefully filled with one dose. I quit meth last week. Something about booking a plane ticket to Los Angeles to end my life gave me the fortitude to face the world without drugs. Besides, I was never really addicted. I just didn’t want to quit because it made me feel as if I was in control. But, even though I’m technically no longer a meth-head, I brought my emergency stash in case I lose my nerve. I’m going to Los Angeles, specifically to the Pacific Ocean, to swim out into the open ocean until I can’t swim anymore. The water is so cold this time of year, my body will be numb and exhausted by the time I reach the point of no return. I won’t be able to fight it when the water enters my lungs. Plus, I’ll be so far out in the ocean, the odds of my body being found will be slim. My parents won’t have to identify me. The cabbie turns the volume up on the radio and Take You Higher is playing on the radio. The dance beat buoys my mood and I allow myself to smile for the first time in days. I set the bottle of pills back inside my purse and pull my gloves on as I sit back. Fifty minutes later, the cab pulls up in front of Terminal B and one of the two guys working at curbside check-in rushes over to help me with my suitcase once the cab driver places it on the curb. I pay the driver and he mutters a quick thank you before he hurries back inside the warm cab. “Holy shit,” I whisper as I pull my faux fur-lined hood over my head. “I ain’t seen it like this in years. I bet they already canceling flights,” the guy says as he takes my carryon bag and we race toward the automatic sliding doors. He leaves me and my bags just inside the doors then he jogs back to his station outside in the freezing cold. What a terrible day to have that job. I push my hood back and the line at the check-in counter snakes across the floor as everyone watches the TV monitors above the counter. “Cancelled,” a voice says behind me. I whip my head around and find a guy with dark eyes and messy brown hair sticking out the bottom of his knit cap. He’s sitting on a gray suitcase with his phone in his hand and a guitar case propped up against the wall behind him. Something about him looks familiar, though I’m pretty certain he’s the kind of guy I would not forget if we’d met before. “You can probably still catch a cab if you leave now,” he continues as he types on his phone. “Then why aren’t you running outside to catch a cab?” “I’m in no hurry to go back.” I stare at the curb outside just as another cab pulls up to drop off some unknowing passenger. I told Meaghan I’d go home if they cancelled the flight, but that’s the last place I want to go right now. “Yeah, me either.” The guy looks up from his phone and smiles. “Yeah, you also have to check in to get your flight rescheduled.” “Yeah, that too.” I try not to blush. Something about his smile makes me feel naked.
